Tribal Colleges Today
With 74 full-time employees, Sitting Bull College is fully accredited to award certificates and Associate Degrees by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. In the fall of 2004 Sitting Bull College became accredited to offer Bachelor Degrees in Business Administration and Elementary Education. Students may also earn Bachelor Degrees through articulation agreements with other colleges and universities in Environmental Science and Special Education.
Education is critical here on Standing Rock Reservation. Our tribe experiences an unemployment rate of over 35% in the summer and over 65% during the winter. Most families live in extreme poverty. Post-secondary education of any sort is rare. Sitting Bull College serves an area of more than 3000 square miles, with a population density of fewer than 4 persons per square mile.
Nationally, 98% of tribal college students qualify for need-based financial aid and 85% of tribal college students live in poverty. More than 50% of tribal college students are single parents with an average of 2.8 dependents. The average tribal college student age is 31 and 70% of tribal college students are female. The tribal colleges offer over 350 degree programs and 179 vocational certificate-granting programs.
Sitting Bull College, like many tribal colleges, accepts all students who apply. 42% of tribal college graduates transfer to four-year institutions.
