At Sitting Bull College, students are given much more than degrees. They also acquire the skills and the confidence necessary to function successfully in two worlds and to help create a better future for themselves and their children. Students at Sitting Bull College have discovered what the great leader knew years ago: education is the key to a better future for Native people.
A new generation is ensuring that the great leader's ideals live on. As one of the first tribal colleges to be established in the nation under the Tribally Controlled Community College Act, Sitting Bull College has enhanced the quality of life for the people on and around the Standing Rock reservation since 1973. Despite many funding inequities and federal budget cuts, Sitting Bull College continues to provide access to quality, relevant and affordable programs.
Sitting Bull College was founded as Standing Rock College, starting with three full time employees. In 1996, the college changed its name as a tribute to its most revered and famous leader, and as a sign of the greatness that has long characterized the Native people of the plains. Today, President Laurel Vermillion and the College Board of Trustees are working with tribal entities, as well as communities on the Reservation to enhance economic development initiatives for the entire reservation.
