Building Intellectual Capital
Intellectual Capital means an accumulation or collection of knowledge, experiences, and wisdom of individual citizens in our communities on the reservation. A well-educated citizenry is rich in intellectual capital necessary for the future of the Oyate.
The 7th Generation Academic Excellence Center builds intellectual capital by focusing on the improvement of literacy and communication skills. Reading, writing, and speaking are not only acts of literacy, but they are demonstrations of intellectual capital necessary for productive citizenship.
As citizens of Standing Rock Indian Reservation, North Dakota, South Dakota, and the United States, students at Sitting Bull College will ultimately enhance their intellectual capital through the effort of the 7th Generation Academic Excellence Center, and prepare themselves for leadership positions in their communities and beyond.
As better readers, writers, and speakers of Standard English, Sitting Bull College students will be better prepared to accept responsibilities of citizenship and leadership at any level they choose to pursue which is the desired outcome of a Sitting Bull College education.
Through improved communication and agreement regarding literacy expectations between and among the education systems on or near the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, students will be able to move seamlessly and successfully from pre-kindergarten through post-college, increasing the retention and graduation rates along the way.
