Bison Hide Tanning Workshops at Kenel and Ft. Yates
McLAUGHLIN- The Bison Education project at Sitting Bull College is once again offering its popular bison hide brain-tanning workshops to all who are interested. This year there are two workshops to choose from.
The first bison hide brain-tanning workshop will be held at the Pow Wow grounds just south of Kenel, SD. It begins Saturday morning, June 19th, and continues through Saturday, June 26th.
The second bison hide brain-tanning workshop to be held at the Farmers Market hoop building on 92nd St. at Fort Yates, ND, 1/2 mile east of Hwy. 24/1806. It begins Saturday morning, July 24th, and continues through Saturday, July 31st.
Everyone is welcome, including those who attended a hide tanning workshop before. People are asked to work together with another family member on a hide. Participants will be able to take home their finished hide at the end of the workshop. There is no cost to participate in these workshops. Meals, hides and supplies will be provided by the Sitting Bull College Bison Education project. The project can even pay for some gas to make sure participants make it there each day.
Interested people are asked to pre-register for meal planning. To pre-register for any of these workshops, please call Sybil Clown at the McLaughlin Bear Soldier campus at 605-823-4318.
Learning to tan hides is a cultural and potentially money-making skill. A hide can be worth more than $800 when finished. Tanning hides by hand also puts us in touch with the spirit and life of the animal. We honor its life this way.
